Remembering William K. “Bill” Mather
The world of clock collecting has lost a dedicated, knowledgeable, fun-loving and generous member. Bill Mather, 83, passed away peacefully at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA on January 27 after suffering complications following a stroke.
Since the day his first clock, a Chauncey Jerome, took its place on the mantel of his Bay Village home Bill was captured. His passion for collecting antiques now focused on clocks and the rest of his life and his family’s would unfold to the beat of multiple ticks and tocks punctuated by chimes and gongs.
Bill was interested in many activities.....model planes, bowling, golf. But mostly he loved people and the people of NAWCC became his life-long friends. Selling Mather’s Auto Sales and moving Betty and the four kids to Vermont in 1970 gave Bill the opportunity and the space to turn The Red Brick House in Randolph Center into one of the largest collections of American clocks in the United States. Collectors from everywhere were always welcome. Of course Bill was also a well-respected dealer at National and Regional meetings and became a “go-to” guy for advice and information. He was honored to be made a NAWCC Fellow.
A Cleveland visit in March would invariably include a special birthday celebration for Bill at Chapter 28. He’ll be remembered by all who knew him and everyone will miss the twinkle in his eye!
A Memorial Service and gathering of friends and family will be held this July in Randolph Center, Vermont.
